If you’re thinking of doing some custom sheet metal fabrication, you’ll need the following tools. However, it’s a fairly long list. So, unless you’re planning on making a career or hobby out of it, you may be better off hiring a fabricator.

Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication Tools You’ll Need

Fox Valley Stamping does the best metal fabrication Chicago Illinois has to offer. We’re here to help with all of our tools if you need it. If not, here’s a list of custom metal fabrication tools you’ll need for your next project.

1. Angle Grinder

An angle grinder is a metal fabricator’s best friend. It’s used for cutting, grinding, and polishing. You’ll want to invest in a durable 4-1/2” or 6” model.

2. Angle Grinder Discs

Of course, if you have an angle grinder, you’ll need angle grinder discs. There’s a whole slew of discs, so what you need depends on your project. Chances are you’ll need more than one type. You can get sets with grinding wheels, cutoff wheels, flap discs, and wire wheels.

3. Angle Finders

Angle finders are protractor-like devices that really live up to their name. They find the right angle for you, and you’ll use it a lot. So, it’s a good idea to invest in a high-quality stainless steel or high-grade aluminum finder.

4. Sheet Metal Fasteners

If you’re joining any materials, you’ll definitely need sheet metal fasteners. Cleco fasteners are quite popular in the industry. Sheet metal fasteners are like clothespins on steroids. They temporarily fasten multiple sheets of metal to ensure proper alignment.

5. Wire Cutters

Wire cutters are essentially strong scissors. You’ll need them to snip off any frayed ends of metal. However, you’ll need a stronger cutter for cutting the sheet metal itself.

6. Throat-less Shears

These nifty sheers give you the leverage you need to cut mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. In addition to cutting straight, they can also cut curved and irregular lines.

7. Drill Bits

Drill bits are some of the most used custom sheet metal fabrication tools. Whether you plan to do a single project or fabricate professionally, you’ll need a big set of quality drill bits. Not having quality drill bits will make a job much harder than it needs to be. So, be sure to invest in a strong, durable set.

Safety Gear

Safety gear is just as essential as having the proper tools! Custom sheet metal fabrication tools should not be used without the following:

  • Cutting glasses or goggles to protect your eyes (should be worn at all times!)
  • Safety gloves to protect your hands from severe cuts and to give you a better grip
  • Back and arm protection to protect against burns while welding
  • Respirator to protect from dangerous gases and hazards while welding
